Reducing the ammount of plastic my family and I use!!!!!!!!

I dont think my family is very conservative when it comes to using plastic. This is because we always by bottles of drinks when we go out, by bottles of water to take on our boat and we use plastic bags at the shop. A way we could save plastic would be to take a drink bottle when we go out rather than by plastic bottles all of the time. Do the same when we go out on our boat and take reusable bags or bilums to the shop so we dont get lots of plastic bags.

Work shop......My clock is finally made!!!!

Today Mr andrews cut some of my finer detales out on my die, eg. Between the legs and around the hand and hook. Once this was done it filed/sandepapered the bit mr andrews had cut and made sure there were no sharp corners  or edges. When that was all done it was my turn nto vacume form my clock, as Mr Andrews was was pulling the handle to suck out all of the air there was a pop. The pop was between the legs as the legs were quite close to each other and the plastic became to thin. Other than that my clock turned out really well. Now all I have to do is paint it, cut it out and put the clock contraption in.I think that this was a really productive lesson for me because I constantly was working on my clock and I finished it all.

The Workshop

Today I cut out my last layer for my die. I used the scissors to cut this layer because it was only one piece of cardboard and thinner than the one yesterday. I tidied the up the second layer and made sure it was all the same size and shape. I set up the hot glue gun and used that to stick on my second and third layers. The first clocks were mad today and we found out that the little foam pieces shrunk when they were heated so manufacturers wouldn't want to use these in there work as they would have to makc many molds.

The Workshop

Today I was making the second layer for my clock die. We didn't have any thick cardboard because the order hadn't come yet. Instead I used two pieces of the thin card board and glued them together to make it thicker. When I was trying to cut the shapes out of the card board it was a bit to thick to use the normal scissors, so instead I used the tin-snips. The tin-snips were much easier to use, but I couldn't cut some of the finer detailed parts so I used the normal scissors for that part.

Work shop

Today was the first time we were in the work shop. I had all of layers and things ready so I was the third person to get by first layer cut on the scroll saw. I'm doing a pirate lego man so there are some fine details, so if Mr Andrews cut them it would have made the plastic pop so he just left them there. Because I couldnt get the fine details cut out I decided to just paint them another colour. The cardboard was missing so when my first layer was cut I used the sand paper and the filer in some part to smoooth the edges for the rest of the lesson.

Types of wood

There are some types of wood that are manufactured in factories some of these woods are Blockboard, Chipboard and Hardboard.

BLOCKBOARD - This is built up with a core of softwood strips bonded together with adhesive and covered with a sheet of plywood on either side. Used as a building material and for furniture manufacture including fitted kitchens / bedrooms.

CHIPBOARD - This is made up of small chips of wood bonded together with resin and formed into sheets by compression. It is not as strong as plywood and block board but it is not expensive. Chipboard is often covered with a plastic laminate or wood veneer and used in furniture.

HARDBOARD - This is made from wood fibres that have been pulped. The pulp is put under pressure until the fibres bond to produce a tough board that is smooth on one side and rough on the other. It is not as strong as the other boards.

Environment

our society now is relying on large amounts of energy and using lots of fossil fuels, large countries such as china are nearly fully relying on fossil fuels. These fossil fuels are polluting the world greatly and that is why there is a need for research for more ways to make energy such as wind energy/wind turbines.

Computer room

Last lesson we were in the computer room because not everyone had their designs ready. That was pretty annoying considering I had done my designs and I was looking forward to starting my template for my clock. Instead of being down in the workshop we did things on the computers, this was helpful because I got a bit ahead of thing and did my research and found the definitions for Vacuum forming, thermo plastic and thermo setting plastic. We also looked at some other peoples logs from last term and that was helpful because it showed us what exactly Mr Andrews is looking for in our blogs.

Vacuum forming

Vacuum forming, commonly known by people as vacuuforming, is a simplified version of thermofoming, whereby a sheet of plastic is heated to a forming temperature, stretched onto or into a single-surface mold, and held against the mold by applying vacuum between the mold surface and the sheet. The vacuum forming process can be used to make most product packaging, speaker casings and even car dashboards.
